Zolpidem is a non-benzodiazepine hypnotic (commonly known as a “Z-drug”). While its chemical structure differs from benzodiazepines, it works in a very similar way by selectively binding to GABA-A receptors in the brain, enhancing the inhibitory neurotransmitter GABA to rapidly induce sleep.
